Population

Several "Barrie population" figures circulate, and they are not in disagreement: they count different places. The city proper counted 147,829 people in the 2021 census. The census metropolitan area, which takes in territory well beyond the city, counted 212,856. Any figure needs its geography attached before it means anything.

The city

People counted on census day, in thousands (the table below is the exact record). The percentage between bars is the change between censuses as Statistics Canada states it, not derived here; the 2001–06 jump partly reflects annexation. The 2011 figure is the 2011 profile's own (135,711, flagged E); StatCan later revised it to 136,063, and the stated +3.9% to 2016 works from that revised base, not from the bar as drawn — see the table note.

How this is counted. Census counts, taken every five years on census day. A census count is not an estimate of today's population: it undercounts (Statistics Canada publishes net undercoverage separately), and it ages between censuses. This series counts the city proper; the Barrie CMA is a different, larger geography with its own series below. This is Statistics Canada’s definition.

People counted on census day, in thousands — a different, larger geography than the city chart above, on its own axis for that reason. Percentages between bars are StatCan's own stated intercensal change. Since 2011 the fringe outgrows the city, and by 2016–21 the gap is nearly double (4.5% city, 8.0% CMA).

How this is counted. The census metropolitan area takes in territory well beyond the city, so this series must never share an axis with the city series. CMHC housing figures report this geography. This is Statistics Canada’s definition.

Two more figures worth naming so they stop causing confusion. The 2021 census also counted the Barrie population centre (the built-up area, which ignores municipal lines) at 154,676. And the City's ward boundary review worked from a projection of roughly 153,000 — a planning estimate, not a census count. Between the censuses the true number drifts: the City's own 2026 budget book plans against growth from 165,500 in 2026 toward 298,000 by 2051, which is a projection with its own methodology again.
